Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader Reveals Every Companion You Can Recruit

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is another CRPG that has been making headlines since its Alpha Stage last year. Set in the Koronus Expanse of the 41st millennium in the grim dark future, players will embark on an unforgettable journey of betrayal, political intrigue, and power play.

Will you continue to side with the God-Emperor or will you be yield to your enemies and join the ruinous forces of Chaos?

During Gamescom 2023, developer and publisher Owlcat Games, who is also known for their Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous CRPGs, released a Companion Trailer. Here, an overview of every companion you can recruit is introduced. Currently, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader has already surged forward to the Closed Beta Stage with no news as to when the game’s release will be.

But one crucial tidbit that the developers confirmed alongside the companion reveal is the Co-Op Mode, which is something that is not available for either of their Pathfinder titles. So at launch, PC players will already be able to go ham with a friend! But for consoles, this feature is intended to be released at a future date.

No other details are currently available on this, but Owlcat Games mentions that they’ve added a “lot of unique and unusual mechanics”. Exciting!

Duty, Above All Else

As a Rogue Trader, you will bring along crew members to go on perilous missions with you. First up is Abelard Werserian, an ex-imperial Navigator who puts duty above all else. Specifically, he is adamant about protecting the House von Valancius trade empire against numerous threats. As a Senechale, Abelard is held to the highest of standards and acts of your character’s right-hand man.

Second is Idira Tlass who is an unsanctioned Psyker, more than capable of utilizing the powers of the Warp to her advantage. She can tell what’s about to happen in the future and she enhances the team’s offensive and defensive skills to help you succeed in combat. But Idira’s abilities come with a price since the voices of the Warp are figuratively eating her own sanity away.

Third is Pasqal Haneumann, a Tech Priest of the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Adeptus Mechanicus is a widely known organization that worships the Omnissiah, the Machine God, capable of providing them with the wisdom to transform technology. Tech Priests, and in particular, Pascal, wields advanced weaponry while providing buffs to his allies. He is an indispensable part of the team due to his profound knowledge of the universe and how it operates.

For the Emperor!

Fourth is Argenta of the infamous Adepta Sororitas or Sisters of Battle, devout followers and combatants of the Ecclesiarchy or the Church of the Imperium of Man. Given her exceptional prowess in the art of ranged combat with her bolters and flamers, Argenta is a highly reliable companion who adjusts very well in fights to gain the upper hand.

Next is Ulfar, a Space Marine Battle-Brother. Although he excels on the battlefield, he is well-suited to destroy enemies up close and personal. Ulfar is a mighty companion your enemies wouldn’t want to mess with given his masterful skill in melee combat.

Last but not least is Yrliet Lanaevyss, an Aeldari Ranger who intends to keep her romantic preference a secret. Similar to Argenta, she can annihilate targets from a distance thanks to her trusty long rifle.

Preference, and Choices

For companions whom you can actually romance in Rogue Trader, you have Cassia, Heinrix, and Jae.

First is Cassia Orsellio from the Great House of the Navis Nobilite. She was forced to live in secrecy for most of her life, often spending the days studying. Because of her mutant powers, Cassia can destroy opponents with ease. She also prefers a male companion so who knows if she will fall for your Rogue Trader?

Second is Heinrix Van Calox, an Ordo Xenos Interrogator of the Holy Inquisition. Unlike Idira, he is a sanctioned Psyker but he also excels as a soldier on the battlefield. However, Heinrix is not one to trust you, the Lord Captain, immediately. He is merely being tolerant until such time that you slip from your duties but only time will tell whether or not he chooses to stay within the party. Although he may seem like an uptight individual, you may woe him to your advantage if the character you create is a female.

Third is Jae Heydari, a Cold Trader and formidable leader who is able to inspire even the weakest allies on the battlefield. With her commanding presence, she can light up the room to make any teammate extremely effective in combat. Jae goes both ways so regardless if your Rogue Trader is male or female, you might just end up building a closer-than-usual relationship with her.

Romance of the Rogue Trader

Romance in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader won’t be as “free” as the one in Baldur’s Gate 3 where interacting with your companions in camp a couple of times will already make them fall for your character. Here, there’s a lot of preparation and thought that goes into finding a worthy partner.

Nobody Expects the Emperor’s Inquisition!

According to Rogue Trader Creative Director Alexander Mishulin, “We have had a lot of fun adding romance to such a dark universe. As you can imagine, romance in 40K is not like it is in other worlds – here, it’s a lot of arranged marriages and political maneuvering. But we’ve had a ton of fun figuring out out-of-the-box ways to incorporate it in Rogue Trader, and we can’t wait for people to see it.”

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader does not have a release date just yet but we will hopefully know more about future tests (looking at you, Open Beta) beforehand. We do have a Rogue Trader Wiki that you need to visit for more on the game. If you want to get into Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you can check out our Wikis.
